Harare, Zimbabwe – A City to Explore

Bordered Northwest of Zambia, Republic of Zimbabwe formerly known as Southern Rhodesia is a landlocked country, located in the southern part of the African continent between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers. Surrounded by Botswana, Mozambique and Zambia it is home to the world’s largest wildlife and the Victoria falls, a major tourist attraction.

Entangled in its economic despair, Zimbabwe is still at a turning point, with tourism making headway into the country, attracting many from around the world. Many who travel towards southern Africa gain a different view of the country. From climbing the second highest peak on the Eastern Highlands to exploring the archaeological ruins of the Great Zimbabwe. Experience the wildlife at the Mana Pools National Park, Go Bungee jumping or take a ferry up to the Victoria falls, experience the wilderness of the safari, adventure the city in Zimbabwe’s very own railway or dine at one of Harare’s finest restaurants.  Zimbabwe has a lot to offer to its travelers.

Harare City ZimbabweMostly, tourists take direct flights to Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. The city is best known for its long preserved cultural and historical heritage. There are many old buildings that can be spotted through the streets. Some of them including The Mining Pension Building Fund, other buildings such as the National Gallery, the Queen Victoria Museum and the Harare City Library can be spotted along the way. While in the city one cannot miss out on the exquisite National Botanical Garden, which houses more than 900 species of wild trees and shrubs from all over the country. Go shopping into some of Harare’s shopping malls, best is to shop at the open flea market at Mbare. Touring the city, one does come across westernized restaurants serving American and European food, but the most exciting are the outdoor cafes. For dining at these cafés is of extreme delight.

Harare International Airport is a major gateway for all the international and regional flights to Zimbabwe and to other neighboring countries. The airport is 7 miles (12km) south east of Harare. Taxis and coaches are available from the airport driving the tourists to the main hotels. Some of the finest and affordable hotels can also be found in the city.

Harare has a well connected transport system. Minibus taxies can be found and are easy to travel in, but touring the city in a car is more common.

Etched up in political intrigue and colonialism, the country is still rich in its local traditions and cultural heritage, the country offers a lot to the world, which is still unexplored by many.
