Gorgeous Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Whenever someone talks about waterfalls there are a few names that come to mind almost instantly, Niagara being one of them. But if you are looking for the ultimate experience of watching thousands of gallons of waters rushing from hundreds of meters in a picture perfect setting then there can be no better place for heading to than the famous Victoria Falls. This 1708 meters wide fall with a vertical height of more than 180 meters is one of the places that tourist worldwide keep in their must see list. Located on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, the falls attract thousand of tourists from around the world.

The falls were discovered by the British in the 17th century, but the place already had a great importance in the legends of the local people who have given it a name which literally translates into the The Smoke That Thunders and rightly so as the thousands of gallons of waters crashing on the rocks create a strong noise that resembles thunder and spray that gives an impression of smoke. The first tourist resort was opened in 1905 on the eastern side of the fall which comes under the jurisdiction of Zimbabwe and since then has become the tourist attraction of the region.

Most tourists prefer to visit the Zimbabwean part off the fall because of the better tourism infrastructure and you can easily find a cheap flight to Harare the capital of Zimbabwe from most of the major European airports. The Zimbabwean part of the Victoria Falls has its own airport for which you can easily find a connecting flight from the capital.

Victoria Falls is the main reason if not the only one for the arrival of the most of the tourists in the country so the government of Zimbabwe has made sure that the infrastructure of the area stay up to date and you will find quite a few decent hotels that caters to all the needs of the tourists. Most of them arrange guided tours of the falls and for your own ease and for saving some of your hard earned cash it is recommended that you tag along with a group taking these tours. You will start hearing the rumble of the falling water a couple of miles away from the place and it gets louder as you get closer.

There are a number of restaurants and shops close to the falls and it will be a good idea to get a coat on rent before getting close to the falls to protect you from soaking in the spraying water. If it’s a sunny day which most of the time is the case in Zimbabwe then you will be able to see a magnificent rainbow right in the center of the fall. Other than its scenic beauty the main attraction of the falls is the number of the adventurous sports you can indulge in ranging from bungee jumping to the kayaking in the waters leading to the waterfront.
